In July 1943, Hans Erich Nossack is on holiday while the Royal Air Force devastates Hamburg in Operation Gomorrah. In parallel, a scene from the series Chernobyl shows a technician forced to inspect Reactor Four after the explosion. These two figures—the witness and the spectator—recur throughout the book as symbolic devices. Between the gaze that observes from a position of apparent safety and the experience of being drawn into the disaster when it is already too late, a fragile yet decisive critical space opens up. It is no longer a matter of extracting the world as an image while claiming to protect it, but of moving through the environment as a system of relationships, accepting that visual languages, in order to become generative again, must relinquish some of their power.
