New Pilots' Tower

Genoa

Clients: RPBW Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Cimolai Spa, ICAM
Year: 2024 – ongoing

On 7 May 2013, the vessel Jolly Nero struck and collapsed the Genoa Pilots’ Tower while manoeuvring in the port, causing nine fatalities. Renzo Piano Building Workshop was commissioned to design the new structure. Following coordination with the relevant authorities and site evaluation studies, the new tower was located within the area of the Waterfront di Levante.
The new Pilots’ Tower is conceived as a steel structure composed of a lattice pylon with tubes and tension cables supporting the control cabin, protected by a roof canopy. Inside the pylon, two rack-and-pinion lifts and a safety staircase provide access to the cabin. The tower rises 65 metres above sea level, reaching 95 metres including the antenna system required for radar and port traffic control operations.

The photographic project systematically documented all phases of construction, from the foundation works to the completion of the structure.
